Detecting changes in diversity in a fluctuating environment based on simulation of stochastic processes ArchiMer
Diserud, Oh.
In this paper, I present a method developed to detect 'extra', or novel, changes in diversity in a naturally fluctuating environment. When comparing samples in order to evaluate changes in community structure, the sampling procedure will inevitably induce randomness in observed species composition and abundance, so two samples may show considerable differences, even if they come from exactly the same community. Sometimes the effort put into the sampling varies as well, leading to the expectation of a further increase in difference. Finally, if there were a temporal distance between the samples, we would like to correct for variations in species abundance occurring naturally due to fluctuating environmental conditions. The test method presented here...

Dynamique des populations marines exploitées. Tome 1. Concepts et modèles ArchiMer
Laurec, Alain; Le Guen, Jean-claude.
This book constitutes the first of a series of three volumes, the purpose of which is to cover the principal methods used in fish population dynamics. It is devoted to the definition of the main concepts, ami the presentation of the usual mathematical models. The second volume will deal with the fitting of the models, and the estimation of parameters. The third will be devoted to sampling problems. These volumes will be recollections of communications presented during ad hoc seminars, hold in Brest (GSG/COB) in 1980 and 1981. The first part deals with the basic concepts related to the two components whose relationship is being described by the population dynamics, namely the fish stock, to its relations with biological populations, and to the partition of...

Horri, Khaled.
Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are a broad group of compounds with varying physicochemical and toxic properties. Among POP, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are two families of hydrophobic compounds sharing some similar environmental properties such as hydrophobicity, persistence, bioaccumulation and toxicity. Previous studies have demonstrated that these compounds could affect fish life-history traits such as survival, growth and reproductive success. However, few studies have focused on environmental situations as most previous works investigated the effect of either single congeners, or single families of molecules among POP, or high concentrations, so that results can hardly be transposed to natural...

Gaudy, R.; Guerin, J.p..
Following are results obtained in our laboratory during breeding experiments with an harpacticoid copepod, Tisbe holothuriae. In small size volumes (200 ml), the potential production appears to be higher when an artificial compound food of animal substances is used instead of a vegetal diet. In medium volume experiments (100 l) the production is related to the surface available for animals in breeding tanks, Breeding in complete cycles can be obtained using various foods, but the quality of diet may markedly affect the characteristics of the vital cycle, such as the length of the fertility period and fecundity. Temperature has a crucial effect, chiefly on dynamic preoccesses, that is to say, developmental rate and average generation time. With different...

Cesmat, Ludovic.
Since 1980, the expansion of a green macro-alga: Valonia aegagropila (C Agardh) is observed in Salses-Leucate lagoon (France). It is currently distributed in the north of the lagoon with important biomasses (40 gDW/m²) eroding the cover of Zostera noltii. The free form of the alga can be transported with the surface or bottom currents depending on seasons. It multiplies mainly by vegetative reproduction. There are few studies on the ecophysiological capacities of V. aegagropila. This work tries to answer why (physiological adaptation) and how (mechanical process of transport) the alga invaded the lagoon, with an approach including observations, experiments in controlled environment and biological and hydrodynamic models. The growth capacities depend on...

Logiciels de dynamique des populations ArchiMer
Beucher, Helene.
This catalogue contains the main programs or software packages concerning populations dynamics. They are used by fisheries scientists for their own research programmes or during international workshops. Therefore, only the programs which can he installed on PC microcomputers were selected. They are classified according to field and each one is described with the main relevant information.

ArchiMer
Caill-milly, Nathalie.
Significant component of the marine benthic ecosystem, exploited bivalves are mainly located inside the coastal area, which temporal and spatial features generate natural population fluctuations and contribute to considerable biomass and demographic structure changes added to anthropogenic activities’ effects (fishing, pollution,…). Understanding of the relationships between the species, its environment and its exploitation is crucial and their formalization, including for management purposes, requires development of mathematical models that aim at describing the functioning of the system, to explain the observed phenomenon in terms of cause and effect or predict effects of new causes. Originating from venerid culture trials carried out in France in the...

Degre, Delphine.
The Aiguillon Cove has been preserved as Natural Reserves since 1996 and 1999 for its international importance as wintering areas for waterbirds. The benthic communities of this a macrotidal bay were still little studied. In order to understand the spatial pattern and the dynamics of the main compartments of its trophic network, two cartographies were carried out at the time of the departure (March) and the arrival (October) of the waders. A monthly study was carried out too in three stations of the upper mudflat. The spatio-temporal homogeneity of the granulometry of the sediments and the strong seasonal variation of the salinity of pore water were highlighted. The molluscs' diversity is low, especially on the upper mudflat where abundance of Hydrobia...
